Coaching Players – Do not coach players when you are officiating.  It is not your job.  Do not tell a player to “get out of the lane,” “keep hands off,” “use a bounce pass,” etc.  While some coaches do not mind, others do.  Several complaints have been received regarding this issue.

Ejections – A reminder.  Please let me know about any ejection you have.  Please send me a copy of your ejection report so that I have info when I speak with the school(s) involved.

Closely Guarded – Remember.  When you start a closely guarded count, you continue the count until the violation occurs or the closely guarded situation ends.  This includes when the play leaves your primary coverage area.  Follow the play with your count.

Head Hits – When a player’s head contacts another head, the floor, a wall, a knee or any other object, an official needs to check that player.  If you have any indication of a possible concussion, the player needs to be sent out (Rule 2-8-5) to be checked by the appropriate health care professional (AHCP).  Do not take any chances with a player’s health in this regard.  If no AHCP is on site, that player is not permitted to return to the game.

Tip of the Week

Three Seconds – “Be a great three-second official.” Because of the free throw lane’s close proximity to the basket, it is a prime scoring area.  Remember, the offensive player gains an unwarranted advantage if he or she can “camp out” in the free throw lane, as a screener, potential shooter, or rebounder.  When the three-second rule is properly enforced, rough post play is reduced.
