Pre-game Protocols
After meeting with the coaches and team captains, the officials should return to their original positions across from the table and remain there until it is time to throw up the jump ball. (See page 18 of the Official’s Manual). This protocol was supposed to be followed for the last several seasons but the necessary follow-up was not in place due to COVID.
Handchecking
Please enforce the handchecking rule. I have already received some complaints from coaches about the lack of enforcement. Anytime a defender places two hands on a ball handler, it is a foul. If we will all focus on this aspect of the handchecking rule, it will clean up many of the other aspects of the handchecking rule.
Teaching Points
Before administering a free throw, “sweep the floor”.
Be ready for the unexpected.
