Some things to pay attention to as we move forward.
Too many travels at the beginning of the dribble are being missed. On the perimeter, sequence the following actions. When the player has the ball, see the feet, identify the pivot foot, note the release of the ball to start a dribble. This release of the ball must occur before the pivot foot is lifted from the floor.
A common miss is when the player with the ball has a left pivot foot and fakes going to the left. The player then picks up the pivot and sometimes even has it back down on the floor to the right before the ball is released for the dribble. This is a huge advantage that we are giving the player with the ball when we do not rule this a travel.
Some officials are talking players out of the lane to avoid having to rule a three-second violation. Do not do this. We are not coaches. If the player has violated, sound the whistle. Keeping the lane clear will improve the flow of the game. We may have to rule three seconds early to establish this. However, once we do, the players will adjust and a smoother flowing game will be the result.
Tip
Assistant coaches are not allowed to be standing except during timeouts and intermissions. Handle this through the head coach. It does not matter if the assistant coaches are “just coaching.”
Thank you for this POE. I shall be mindful to consistently apply this travel violation, as well as look at IABBO videos.
