Professionalism…Professionalism is something that is expected of all officials at all times. Common traits include integrity, punctuality, consistency and being dressed appropriately. It means following the accepted protocols for performing one’s duties.

This means being on time and, if circumstances prevent this, notifying our partner(s) about the issue. Professionalism covers all interactions that officials have with players, coaches, fans, table personnel and anyone else involved in the game. This includes verbal as well as non-verbal interactions.

When one of us does not live up to the accepted standards, this tarnishes all of us who put on the stripes. Let’s be mindful of our obligation to the game and to each other.

Tip

Coaching Box…Let’s be reminded that head coaches may stand within the confines of the coaching box.  A head coach is not permitted on the court except during timeouts and intermissions.  During timeouts and intermissions, such on court presence is limited to the timeout area.

A coach is never permitted to be in front of the table at any time.  Only the head coach is permitted to stand and coach during the game.  Do not allow assistant coaches to be up during the game.

Coaches who are not following these protocols need to be reminded of the limitations of the rules.  We have various tools at our disposal to do this.

Please do not ignore enforcing this rule.

Hello Mr. Paul and fellow officials,
I love everything that is stated in this message!
Couldn’t agree more with all that was stated! I think everyone in our organization does a very good job of portraying a professional attitude and appearance! In my experience, this is the exception rather than the normal however! Let us continue to uplift one another and continue to hold one another accountable for representing our organization and the State of South Carolina with the utmost integrity and professionalism!
I am very thankful to have a group of officials and mentors to be associated with!
Thanks for all you do Mr. Paul Behr!
    Sincerely,
    David Ridgeway
