Fan Communication…DO NOT TALK to fans!

We have gotten numerous reports of officials engaging in conversations with fans over what is happening on the court. When you do this, you are elevating them to your level.  Almost all of them cannot do what you do.  If a fan is a problem, get game management to address the problem.  Do not do so yourself.  Please note that game management is not a police officer.  It is the AD or his representative.

Free Throws…Trail Positioning…Three Person Crew

Please review the diagram below for positioning of the Trail during free throws.

Before the last free throw of a set of free throws, the Trail should be positioned near the jump ball circle.  This position helps to facilitate substitutions at the proper time.  It also enables the official to quickly resolve issues with the table over the recently reported foul.

For the last free throw or only free throw, the Trail should move near the end of the coaching box as shown in the diagram.  This allows the Trail to assist the Center and Lead with rebounding action.  Some of us seem to think we should be in the backcourt during this free throw.  That is an incorrect position.  If there are players in the backcourt, one can observe them from the position near the coaching box.

Tip

Foul Reporting

Foul reporting is to be done from the reporting area.  Some of us are reporting from just about anywhere on the court.  While this may be appropriate for travel ball, it is not appropriate for school ball.
