Indian Land High School
This school has a fairly large student following which is great for the atmosphere of the games. However, there is an issue that needs the attention of all officials who officiate games there (see picture below).
By rule (1-20), non-playing personnel are not allowed to stand on the floor between the free throw lane lines extended. The fans circled are all in this prohibited area. These fans may stand within the bleachers but not on the floor in this area. Media personnel are also not permitted to be in this area. See diagram below.
This “red zone” extends all the way to the bleachers. No non-player should be standing on the floor in this area.
Please keep in mind that fans outside the “red zone” (towards the sidelines) may stand directly in front of the bleachers so long as in doing so they do not interfere with a player or an official trying to perform his/her duties.
Technical Fouls
Technical fouls and their aftermath are an extended “dead” period. Despite this, we must remain alive to our responsibilities to supervise the players during this period of time. Most of the time players will gather around the division line. At least one official MUST keep an eye on this gathering. When tensions are running high, a failure to supervise these players can lead to problems.
The image below demonstrates a pro-active approach to keep the lid on in these circumstances.
Tip of the Week

- Substitutions affect match-ups in your game.
- Be careful of Big vs. Small Match-Ups.
