Overall the enforcement for 10-7-12 (hand checking) has been pretty good. The one area which has been a little weak is ruling a foul when contact on a ball handler occurs due to an extended arm bar. Remember that such contact is a foul regardless of whether or not it affects the ball handler’s ability to play.
As this area receives better enforcement, be aware of the offensive player using the forearm to prevent the defender from attacking the ball or to push the defender away. If observed, such actions would constitute a player control foul on the ball handler.
Some girls have been observed participating with headbands that have “tails.” Tails are illegal. Either the headband must be removed or the tails need to be tucked in.
A reminder…For the two middle school conferences in York County for 7th grade games the required uniform colors are reversed. That is, the visiting team wears white and the home team wears the darker color. This is due to some schools having only one set of uniforms for their middle school program.
Tip of the Week
Fouls – On all fouls the ruling official is to stop the clock by giving a single, sharp blast of the whistle and fully extending a clenched fist above the head (signal 4) at the spot of the foul. State the color and number of the player who fouled and indicate the nature of the foul by giving a preliminary foul signal. If the foul is a shooting foul, verbally state the number of the shooter and visually indicate to your partners the number of free throws. The official should then move quickly (jog) to the reporting area to report the foul in the same order to the official scorer.
